Home ABOUT US

HIV-Network is initiated by Dhojo Wahengbam from Manipur, India for the PLHIV and Drug Users' community as well as HIV/AIDS activist to share their opinions on the issues and problems encountered by the PLHIV community and people using drugs.

The initiation of the network is confronted with constraints and limited resources, we are determined to operationalise the HIV-Network into a full-fledged e-network in our struggle to fight against the HIV/AIDS related stigma and discrimination and to raise the issue of drug users’ and people living with HIV.

In today’s world, PLHIV and IDUs do not occupy a very respectable place in the society and as such, they are stigmatized often by the general community. They are also considered to be among the most vilified and demonized human beings in the society. Tagged as ‘junkies’ or ‘troublemakers’, their rights and dignity is often denied or challenged. Simply because of using illegal drugs and/or living with HIV-HCV infection/co-infection, they have been categorized as incapable people. Nevertheless, having a unique expertise and experience, they can play a vital role in re-defining the health, social, legal and research policies that affect them. They also have the capability to organize, educate and to be educated, manage funding, serve on key committees etc.

Not only medical problem, they also face problems of psychological, financial, lack of health access, stigma etc. The HIV-Network was conceptualized as an e-platform by a group of IDUs and people living with HIV to discuss problems/issues confronting this community for bringing a tangible solution through online services. Interested people can visit this site (www.hiv-network.com) for updating information and be a member through online. This Network endeavors to improve the quality of life for people using drugs and people living with HIV raising the self-esteem. This community needs to be acknowledged as equals and be respected for the expertise/professionalism in addressing various issues affecting their lives. The Network aims to raise a voice for the PLHIV and IDUs for recognition of the good work, often without funding, in addressing HIV or HCV and other health problems faced by them.

The information shared by the IDUs and PLHIV can be an effective/faster network. The network can be a platform to air grievances by the discriminated/stigmatized community. There will be less inhibition in sharing their true feelings/problems through internet virtually. The network can be a medium for online activism.

We encourage all the people who are IDUs, people living with HIV as well as activists to join this e-network to share the common problems and issues. We welcome suggestions and feedbacks in the process of making this e-network. Your cooperation and support would mean a great contribution in bringing about improvement in the lives of the IDUs and people living with HIV. We look forward to your valuable ideas and comments in the formation of this e-network.
